2023-24 APS Coaching for Women in Data and Digital Program participant Kate Churchward shares her story
Why did you decide to take part in the Coaching for Women in Digital program?
I was encouraged by my boss to take part, to be honest, I have taken part in ‘professional development’ programs before and not had especially positive experiences with them.
What has been the biggest benefit in participating in this program?
The biggest benefit was fundamental – changing my approach to my personal development and how I operate in the workplace – focusing on my strengths instead of my weaknesses. This shift has been a game changer which has led to increased self-confidence and opened me up to meeting challenges with my strengths. Another huge benefit has been the role self-reflection plays in my learning.
How has this program helped you in your current role?
It has helped me by identifying and understanding what my actual strengths are. This has increased my self-knowledge and confidence in how I contribute (and can enhance my contribution) to work challenges and problem solving skills.
Why would you encourage others to be part of the Coaching for Women in Data and Digital program?
Discovering your strengths is a very powerful exercise which can transform how you see yourself and others. This confidence allows you to operate in a more focused and effective way, firstly by knowing how you can contribute but also being able to appreciate and see the strengths that others have to bring to the table (hence, empowering others by having their strengths called out and employed).
How did you balance both the commitments for the program and the commitments of your job?
Balancing my commitments was enabled by the kindness and flexibility of the course delivery staff – plenty of opportunities are given by way of catch up sessions and support.
What is your top tip for new program participants?
Do the self-reflection work – it’s where the gold is!
